What is zari?
Zari is the metallic thread woven into Banarasi sarees, dupattas, and suits to create their signature borders, motifs, and jaal (net-like) patterns. It has been used in Indian textile weaving for centuries and is what gives Banarasi silk its characteristic shimmer.
What is the difference between pure zari and tested zari?
Pure zari is made by wrapping a fine silver wire (traditionally coated in gold) around a silk thread core. It is more expensive, has a slightly duller, warmer metallic sheen, and does not tarnish quickly.
Tested zari (sometimes called "tested" or imitation zari) uses a polyester or synthetic thread coated with a metallic finish, usually copper or aluminium with a gold- or silver-toned electroplating. It is significantly more affordable, has a brighter, shinier finish, and can tarnish or dull faster over time.
How can you tell pure zari from tested zari by looking at it?
- Burn test (on a loose thread only): Pure zari's silk core singes and smells like burnt hair, leaving a soft ash. Tested zari's synthetic core melts and beads up, smelling like burning plastic.
- Sheen: Pure zari has a warmer, slightly muted gold or silver tone. Tested zari tends to look brighter and more uniformly shiny.
- Weight: Fabric with pure zari is generally heavier for its size than fabric with tested zari.

Is tested zari a lower-quality or fake product?
Not necessarily — tested zari is not counterfeit, it's simply a different, more budget-friendly material, and many buyers choose it deliberately for everyday or lighter festive wear. The important thing is that a seller discloses clearly which type of zari is used, rather than implying tested zari is pure. Reputable Banarasi weaving houses will always specify this on the product listing.
Does pure zari need special care?
Yes. Sarees with pure zari should always be dry-cleaned, stored away from moisture and direct sunlight, and folded along soft lines to prevent the metal thread from cracking.
