How to Care for and Store a Banarasi Silk Saree
Share
Can you wash a Banarasi silk saree at home?
No. Banarasi silk sarees, especially those with zari work, should always be dry-cleaned by a professional experienced with silk and zari fabrics. Home washing, even by hand, can damage the silk fibres and cause the zari thread to tarnish, fray, or lose its shape.
How often should a Banarasi saree be dry-cleaned?
Dry-clean only after multiple wears or when visibly soiled — over-cleaning silk unnecessarily can wear down the fabric over time. For a saree worn once at an event, airing it out and spot-cleaning any specific marks is often sufficient before storage.
How should a Banarasi saree be folded?
Fold along soft, gentle lines rather than sharp creases, and periodically refold the saree along slightly different lines every few months. This prevents the zari thread from cracking or the silk from developing permanent, weakened fold lines over time.
What should a Banarasi saree be stored in?
Store in a soft muslin or cotton cloth, never in plastic. Plastic traps moisture and can cause the silk to yellow or develop mildew over time, while breathable fabric allows the saree to remain in stable condition. Avoid direct sunlight and high-humidity storage areas, both of which can fade colour and dull zari over time.
How should you protect the zari specifically?
Keep zari-worked areas away from direct friction with other garments in storage, and avoid spraying perfume or deodorant directly onto zari-worked sections, as certain chemicals can accelerate tarnishing. Occasionally airing out stored sarees also helps prevent moisture buildup around delicate zari work.
Can silverfish or pests damage a stored saree?
Yes, silk is vulnerable to silverfish and other fabric pests. Using neem leaves, cloves, or silica gel packets (not mothballs, which can leave odour and residue on silk) in the storage area helps protect sarees during long-term storage.
